Update so far

The last 4 weeks has been very congested with many members having upwards of 3 games per week (It's okay if you've got deep pockets like Alan.....!;))

Interclubs

We have now won all our Interclub matches so far this season, even if we have failed to bring the trophy along on the night on 2 occasions.....!). A big thank you to everyone who has participated in these matches during this busy period. The highest up teams were skipped by:

  • Aberlemno - John Dowell
  • Catterthun - One of the Robertson's!
  • Dun - Sandy Reid
  • Arbroath - Alan Arnot (Only 1 rink playing but beggars can't be choosers.....!)

Arnot Trophy

Lindsay Hume and his rink of John Dowell, James Arnot & Thomas Halder won the Arnot Trophy defeating Angus Dowell and his team in the final.

Other results

Sandy Reid, Alan Arnot, Eric Potts and John Halder won their match against Lundie & Auchterhouse at the Indoor Bospiel in Dundee (don't know who the winning side and highest up rink was).

John Dowell and his rink won our latest match in the Ferburn Trophy.

One month in

Well folks, the first month of the curling season seems to have come and gone quicker than Hamish can down a pint......!

We've had a pretty full schedule over the last few weeks especially now we are entered into the Agricar League. Speaking of such we are struggling a little at the moment with 1 win and 1 peel out of 5 games but I'm sure we'll get the hang of things soon.

In the 1st round of the Arnot Trophy the teams skipped by John Halder, Angus Dowell, Trish Hynd and James Arnot made it through to the semi finals.

We've got a busy time with Interclub matches coming up and we got off to a good start against Brechin Castle with a 28-17 victory, Sandy Reid's rink being the highest up. Everyone's participation in the Interclub matches is much appreciated and we hope that all members can help out throughout the season.

One last note, annual subs of £35 are due and if Duncan Stewart hasn't already managed to nab you for them could you please try to arrange payment next time you see him.

Start of Season 2012/13

Hope you are all well and your you've been doing your stretches in preparation for the new season!

Briefly before I mention curling just a note to say well done to Dougie Alexander for winning the inaugural Evenie Water Golf Day at Blair Atholl back in June, he won on easy street so there will be a handicap review prior to next years day out....!

On to the curling.........

  • The Club Competitions are to continue as normal with the first couple of games in the Ovenstone having taken place
  • Hamish Robertson and his rink's have got off to a good start representing the club in Province competitions with wins in both the Ferburn and Dewar Trophies
  • Hopefully you will all have noticed along with your syllabus that you received a draw sheet for the Agricar League that we have entered as a club this season. This is to allow the members to get more games at a good level against clubs and curlers that perhaps some of us have never played against before. You are reminded that if you are drawn to play in a team in the Ovenstone that your team are part of the rota for playing in the Agricar League. They are played on Thursday nights throughout the season and if you are unavailable to play the usual procedure applies where you have to arrange your own substitute. Garry Smith's rink narrowly lost out to Suttieside in the first game last week.

March Update

It's been a while since I last updated the Blog but here is a summary of what has happened recently as best I know it.

Province Points
John Dowell, Ian Robertson & Sandy Reid represented the club in the Province Points at the start of the month and were tied for 1st place in the team event with Letham Grange CC. Unfortunately Letham Grange came out on top with a better draw to the button in the tie break. Ian was 3rd overall in the Individual event.

Interclub v Fotheringham
We won our final inteclub against Fotheringham CC 3 games to 1 with Ian Robertson's rink being the highest up. This means that we won 7 out of 8 Interclub's this year, a super effort from everyone involved. Just means we have a bigger bill for the engraving now....!

District Medal
Two rinks visited Kirkcaldy Ice Rink a couple of weeks ago to play our District Medal match against Raith & Abbotshall CC winning one match and peeling the other for a 14-6 win. A good time was had and it was great to visit another Ice Rink, especially playing on their very interesting ice!
The 2 rinks were: Hamish Robertson, Alan Arnot, Garry Smith, David Patullo & John Dowell, Sandy Reid, Thomas Halder, Alistair Stewart.

Angus Challenge
John Dowell and his rink were beaten by Edzell CC in a close final of the Angus Challenge

Scottish Schools
Hard lines to Thomas Halder who came ever so close to retaining the Scottish Schools he helped win last after a last end defeat in the final at Murrayfield.

RCCC Area 9 Top Ten Challenge
Nine members decided they would spend the hottest March day on record curling rather than sunbathing by representing the club in the Top Ten Challenge at Forfar on Sunday 25th. Wise choice I say as they successfully defended the title we won last year and in the process added some money to the club funds due to a decent prize fund.
The nine players that played were: Kirsty Geddes, John Dowell, Angus Dowell,  Sandy Stewart, Alistair Stewart,   Alan Arnot, Craig Arnot, Mike Morison and William Reekie.
A big well done to you all, especially to John, Angus & Alistair who were there for 11 hours....! Hope you managed a drink to celebrate!

AGM
A reminder that the AGM is being held on Tuesday 3rd April at 7.30pm in the Star Inn.

Ovenstone & Balmadies
All to play for going into the last few games, here is an update of the tables upto 9th March.

Well done to John Dowell's rink for getting through to the Final of the Angus Challenge where they will take on Edzell on the 18th March.

January Update

The Club's away day took place on Sat 28th Jan when 16 members visited Kinross Ice Rink.
Fun was had by all and well done to James Arnot and his rink (sorry can't remember who was in it, sure my drink was spiked...!) for coming out in top, only winning with his very last stone as it was tight between all 4 teams.
A big thank you to Mike Morison for organising the day.

The MacIntosh Cup for the Club Points was played for also in January with Sandy Reid, John Dowell and Ian Robertson being the top 3 respectively, they now go forward to represent the club in the Province points on the 1st March.

Ian Roberston's rink unfortunately got knocked out of the Crichton Tankard at Aberdeen in a close game. Sources tell me Ian tried to intimidate the poor young ginger lassie with a strong hitting game but she wasn't to be rattled and brought the hardy Friockheim boys down a peg or two......!

Also well done to Gary Smith & Alan Arnot and their rinks for making the knock out stages of the Yara Farmers curling tournament at Perth recently.

A reminder that the Balmedies Trophy starts on the 8th February.
